It All Started With A Dream
Since childhood, I’ve carried a vision of being a journalist and having a “room with a view” — a place from which I could write stories about the world and the journeys that shaped me.
My parents often spoke of places they had traveled and experienced firsthand. Perhaps that planted the seed that one day I, too, would have stories of my own to tell from faraway places.
And voilà… Having a beer in Bucharest, Romania.
A Chance Encounter That Changed Everything
My path in life changed in a high rise elevator, when I met the publisher of Global Traveler Magazine. He was curious and wanted more, so we met again. New job, Western Regional Manager for Global Traveler.
When a Dream Came Close, Then Slipped Away
CME-Abroad.com was created to send American doctors to other parts of the world for required CME credits. I had covered Thailand, Turkey, and Malaysia, but a trip to Cuba for the Art Biennale came up at the last minute, during the Obama era. That was two years of solid effort. Everything was in place and looked rosy (and profitable), but the door slammed shut again. The dream didn't last long... enough.
The Journey That Ended as the World Shut Down
I'd just finished two extensive explorations of mineral waters all over Portugal when COVID hit. Mine was one of the last planes from Madrid to arrive to the chios at LAX, the day COVID closed the doors to the world.
A Journey That Opened the Door to Medical Tourism
During a pitch meeting with Thai Tourism, I was invited to visit Thailand on a FAM trip. This was in the year 2000, during the infancy of Medical Tourism. Their investment included enrolling me in a competition for best blog about medical tourism in Thailand. I didn't win the contest, but did create my first blog: bbablog.com and became a facilitator for Yanhee Hospital in Bangkok. BoomerBroadsAbroad.com took on a life on it's own and now in it's third incarnation.
